Trail Info

The Route

Starting in Amroth, the path follows along a pretty beach and then quickly climbs up to the wooded cliff top, from where it follows up and down along cliffs and beaches, passing the lovely seaside resort of Saundersfoot before descending once again at the charming, colourful harbour town of Tenby.

From the golden sandy beaches of Tenby, the path climbs to the clifftops once more and offers stunning views, passing Lydstep and the little beach at Skrinkle Haven with it’s famous ‘church doors’ natural feature in the cliffs. The trail continues along the cliffs before detouring inland around the Royal Military Range at Manorbier, then returns to the cliff edge to continue to Manorbier Beach, passing the King’s Quoit cromlech – a Neolithic burial chamber – on the way.

From Manorbier beach the trail climbs back up to the cliff tops and down past secluded coves and lovely beaches including the beautiful Barafundle beach – often named the best beach in Wales – before reaching Broadhaven South beach, from where there are two options into the little village of Bosherston.

The shorter option leads through the dunes and past the famous lily ponds of Bosherston and the slightly longer option continues along the beach and passes through the military range, towards St. Govan’s chapel, hidden in the cliff face, from where the road takes you inland into Bosherston.

From Bosherston, if the military range is open, the trail continues along a flat cliff top path before heading inland towards Castlemartin and Freshwater West. If the range is closed, the inland trail leads along the edge of the military lands before rejoining the coastal trail past the Merrion Barracks and then continuing towards Castlemartin and stunning beach at Freshwater West.

The trail then returns to the cliff tops and leads along a rugged and challenging section, around the headland towards Angle, with views over Milford Haven, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. From Angle to Pembroke the character of the walks is more industrial, passing an oil refinery and with view of the associated activity in Milford Haven, before finishing off at the impressive Pembroke Castle.

Terrain Overview

The walking on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is generally not too strenuous and although the ups and downs are sometimes steep, they are short, with the highest point of the cliffs only reaching just over 80m. The paths often follow close to the cliff edge leading down to the beach and back up again and are well maintained and signposted.
Some sections are a bit more rugged and exposed, and walkers will need a head for heights, however anyone with reasonable fitness should not have any problem following the trail. The section between Amroth and Manorbier passes through several seaside towns, after which the trail becomes a little more remote, before reaching the more industrialized section between Angle and Pembroke However, this section still feels quite remote, passing mostly through farmlands and forestry and away from roads.

Terrain by Stages

Amroth to Tenby: Road section along the beach out of Amroth, and then grassy, forested and sheltered clifftop paths with great views. Some nice beach walking at Tenby.

Tenby to Manorbier: Nice beach walking out of Tenby, then more rugged and open terrain with mostly good, grassy clifftop paths all the way to Manorbier, dropping down to the beach at Lydstep on the way but soon rejoining the clifftops. Slightly exposed section of cliff walk past Skrinkle Beach and military buildings towards Manorbier, with an alternative inland route available.

Manorbier to Bosherston: Well maintained paths and tracks, Some short but strenuous ups and downs at the start, easier walking as you reach the cafe at Stackpole, and Barafundle beach, before climbing back up the cliffs towards Broadhaven beach. From here there are two options to Bosherston, the shorter, inland along the famous Lily ponds or, if the military range is open, the coastal route along the cliffs to St. Govan’s Chapel before heading inland to Bosherston.

Bosherston to Freshwater West: From Bosherston to Castlemartin there are two route options, depending on if the military range is open to walkers that day or not.
The coastal route offers easy walking on good trails through the army range, passing St Govan’s Chapel hidden down the cliffs at the start of the walk, and the famous natural arch the ‘Green Bridge of Wales’ at the end of this section. The second half of the walk heads away from the coast and joins with the inland option, leading through more military and farm lands towards Castlemartin and then continuing just off the road towards the golden beach of Freshwater West.
The inland route heads inland from Bosherston along the Castlemartin Range trail and skirts the inland edges of the military range, before rejoining the main trail and continuing towards Castlemartin and then Freshwater West.

Freshwater West to Angle: Good paths along a rugged clifftop section all the way to Angle, with several steep, though short, ups and downs. Remote and isolated, with no shortcuts, but with some lovely, expansive views across the open sea and then Milford Haven.

Angle to Pembroke: A long but fairly easy walk along good trails. The high cliffs are behind you now and the trail undulates along the coast along farmland and forested tracks and paths. Some road walking out of Angle and again on the last section, reaching the suburbs of Pembroke.

Accommodation

Staying at the very best accommodation during your time in Wales can transform a “good” hiking tour into a “great” hiking tour.

That’s why, at Hillwalk Tours, we take the quality of our accommodation partners seriously. So much so that you will find we strive to only work with high-quality and well-reviewed accommodation. Additionally, most of our accommodation partners have been personally checked by a member of the Hillwalk Tours team to ensure your comfort.

As keen hikers ourselves we know you’ll want somewhere relaxing to put your feet up in the evening. A place where a warm smile from your hosts makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. If your hiking gear gets wet, it’s nice to know that you can dry it or, if you ask, it may even be taken from you and returned nice and dry the next morning.

Comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms (where available), tasty breakfast menus, and a friendly & cosy atmosphere – these are all the things that we like so you can rest assured that we’ll do our best to find them for you as well.

To find out more about the types of accommodation you can expect to find on a Hillwalk Tours walking holiday, read here: Accommodation on your Walking Tour

In addition, if you’d like to stay an extra night at any location during your hiking tour, just let us know.

Please Note:

Due to limited accommodation options in some locations on your tour (particularly at Freshwater West and Angle), we may need to book you into accommodation which will require transfers to/from your hike start/end point or where you will have private bathroom facilities instead of an ensuite. We may also need to book you into the same accommodation for more than one night to cover multiple locations. The cost of this is covered in your basic tour price and will not affect your tour itinerary.

In general, we try to book accommodation which is as close to the local amenities as possible. If you are staying in a remote location (where access to local pubs/restaurants is not feasible), the hosts of the accommodation that you are staying at will ensure that you are well fed.
