Trail Info

The Route

While the official guidebook describes the route of the Hadrian’s Wall Path from east to west, many hikers also choose to walk the trail from west to east i.e., starting from Bowness-on-Solway and hiking towards Newcastle.

Starting from Bowness-on-Solway, on the Irish Sea, the trail first makes its way through the flat coastal landscape along the Solway Firth before following the River Eden into the historic border city of Carlisle.

From there, the route follows a pastoral landscape of fields and meadows that passes through several small villages. After Banks, more and more remains of Hadrian’s Wall and its forts, towers and castles become visible as the trail follows the line of the Wall east towards the Roman Fort at Birdoswald and the pretty village of Gilsland.

The trail soon rises to follow the tops of the Northumberland Crags with Roman remains at every turn. Near Once Brewed you come to the highest point of the trail and close by lies the archaeological site of Vindolanda. The route continues past the well-preserved Roman fort of Housesteads before descending again through the wide, open spaces of the Northumberland National Park.

At Chollerford, with its Roman Fort of Chesters, the trail crosses the River Tyne and then continues past the old Roman Portgate, near Corbridge. The route then follows the old Military Road, built on top of the Wall, through a pastoral landscape towards Heddon-on-the-Wall where you find the last preserved stretch of Roman Wall along the route.

The trail now veers south to follow the River Tyne to Newburn and then through the city of Newcastle on former railway tracks and footpaths to the Roman Fort of Segedunum at Wallsend, near the North Sea.

Terrain Overview

The walking on the Hadrian’s Wall Path trail is relatively easy along footpaths, cycle lanes, well-maintained paths and tracks through fields and on good paths along the top of the Northumberland Crags. Though sometimes muddy in places, there is very little rugged or very wet ground.

Anyone who is reasonably fit should be able to walk the Hadrian’s Wall Path. However, the central section between Birdoswald and Chollerford includes a surprising amount of up and down and there are several short, steep climbs and descents along the crags – a bit like walking along the coast. Beyond that, the path is more or less flat for much of its length. The total aggregate ascent is approximately 2,000m over the entire route and the highest point is just 345 metres above sea level.

Hadrian's Wall Path West to East Elevation Profile

Terrain by Stages

Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle: Mostly level walking on grassy paths and some roads and tracks followed by good footpaths and parkland along the River Eden. Some up and down near the river.

Carlisle to Lanercost: Footpaths, some road walking, grassy field paths and riverside paths. Mostly level with some minor up and down near Walton and a steeper climb and descent at Lanercost.

Lanercost to Once Brewed: After an initial climb some fairly easy walking on grassy paths through fields and a little road walking. From Greenhead the hike includes a surprising amount of up and down, with longer climbs at Greenhead and particularly to the Winshields Crags, near Once Brewed.

Once Brewed to Chollerford: The day starts with a longer uphill walk to the trail followed by a particularly steep ascent at Peel Gap. The trail follows mostly grassy paths along some steep cliffs between Once Brewed and Highshield Crags, but an alternative route is available there. The first half of the day includes a surprising amount of up and down. More grassy path along the last of the crags, with some shorter, steep climbs. This is followed by more level walking on field paths and then a steady descent and some road walking near Chollerford.

Chollerford to Corbridge: First along a road followed by field paths through pastures and meadows beside the road and short stroll through a forest plantation. From Halton Chesters Fort, more walking on quiet country roads, a stroll through undulating woodland, some field paths and a footpath into the centre of Corbridge. After crossing the Tyne at Chollerford, the trail climbs steadily for the first half of the hike and then descends again towards the Tyne at Corbridge.

Portgate to Newburn: Grassy paths through pastures and fields on either side of the B6318 road. Some road walking at Heddon, followed by a footpath and a riverside path. One longer but not very steep descent after Heddon.

Newburn to Wallsend: Mostly level, paved footpaths and cycle lanes along the river and through the centre of Newcastle. Walking is mostly on tarmac; some walking along roads. No notable climbs.

Accommodation

Staying at the very best accommodation during your time in England can transform a “good” hiking tour into a “great” hiking tour.

That’s why, at Hillwalk Tours, we take the quality of our accommodation partners seriously. So much so that you will find we strive to only work with high-quality and well-reviewed accommodation. Additionally, most of our accommodation partners have been personally checked by a member of the Hillwalk Tours team to ensure your comfort.

As keen hikers ourselves we know you’ll want somewhere relaxing to put your feet up in the evening. A place where a warm smile from your hosts makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. If your hiking gear gets wet, it’s nice to know that you can dry it or, if you ask, it may even be taken from you and returned nice and dry the next morning.

Comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms (where available), tasty breakfast menus, and a friendly & cosy atmosphere – these are all the things that we like so you can rest assured that we’ll do our best to find them for you as well.

To find out more about the types of accommodation you can expect to find on a Hillwalk Tours walking holiday, read here: Accommodation on your Walking Tour

In addition, if you’d like to stay an extra night at any location during your hiking tour, just let us know.

Please Note:

Due to limited accommodation options in some locations on your tour, we may need to book you into accommodation which will require transfers to/from your hike start/end point or where you will have private bathroom facilities instead of an ensuite. We may also need to book you into the same accommodation for more than one night to cover multiple locations. The cost of this is covered in your basic tour price and will not affect your tour itinerary.

In general, we try to book accommodation which is as close to the local amenities as possible. If you are staying in a remote location (where access to local pubs/restaurants is not feasible), the hosts of the accommodation that you are staying at will ensure that you are well fed.
