Gentle Hikes

Our Gentle Hiking Tours on the Camino Frances are designed with the part-time hiker in mind.

People for whom taking photos, meeting the locals and enjoying a long lunch are as important as the hike itself.

Look out for the 📜 symbol: these itineraries cover at least the last 100km of the Camino Frances - if you wish to achieve your ‘Compostela’ (i.e. the official Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Certificate), you should choose one of these itineraries.

Slow Pilgrimage: Our 'Slow Pilgrimage’ hiking tours on the Camino focus on the last 100km between Sarria and Santiago at a slower pace. Over nine or ten relaxed walking days you cover less daily distance than on our standard Gentle itineraries. With just 10 - 15km (6 - 9.5 miles) to walk each day, you will have lots of time to embrace all that the final stage of Camino Frances has to offer. Enjoy the gentle rolling hills of Galicia, explore charming villages with pretty churches, taste outstanding local cuisine, and embrace that famous camaraderie with fellow pilgrims. If the experience is as important to you as the walk - this is the trip for you.

Trail Info

The Route

The Camino Frances (or the French Way) begins on the French side of the Pyrenees, in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. From there, it runs across the Pyrenees and continues through the north of Spain all the way to Santiago de Compostela, creating a walk that is, overall, almost 800km in length. The entire Camino Frances route can be completed within four to five weeks, passing through the major cities of Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos and Leon.

Our longest Camino walking tours start from the hamlet of O Cebreiro, one of the highest points on the Camino Frances. From here you will enjoy stunning mountain views as you descend along a mixture of tracks and footpaths to the village of Triacastela. There is a choice of routes from Triacastela to Sarria; the scenic northern route, through forests with woodland paths, or the southern route via the beautiful Samos Monastery.

Leaving Sarria, your walk to Portomarin will take you through many traditional Galician towns and villages on quiet rural roads and paths. The Camino then crosses the river Miño, passes through more hamlets and villages, and continues on country roads to Palas de Rei. On the next stage of the route you will pass through the market town of Melide and follow tracks and forest paths to Arzúa. The Camino Frances trail then continues through woodlands and villages, on country roads and forest tracks, to A Rua.

The final stage of the route will bring you to your destination, Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to many sights and attractions.

Terrain Overview

The terrain along the last 160km of the Camino Frances is well-suited for walking and includes woodland paths, tracks and lanes through pastures and villages, small rural roads and sandy footpaths that run parallel with roads.

The general feel of Galicia is often described as green, wooded and criss-crossed with old walled lanes. The Camino Frances in Galicia is often shaded, so it is cool and pleasant, even in the middle of the day during the summertime.

Unlike many modern long distance hiking routes, that might avoid large towns or villages, the ancient pilgrim routes like the Camino Frances pass through many settlements where shelter, food and refreshments are available. On some days on the Camino a pilgrim might pass 10 or 11 hamlets and villages.

The route of the Camino de Santiago through Galicia includes just a few steeper ascents and descents. There is one long but gentle descent before Triacastela and there are number of longer gradual climbs, particularly after Sarria and Portomarin. Total aggregate ascent over the last 160km of the Camino Frances is between 3,300m and 3,600m, depending on route choice. The highest point of the route is just outside O Cebreiro at 1,380m.

Extra Days/Activities

Give those weary legs some respite and book an extra night to explore some of the attractions along the Camino Frances!

Santiago de Compostela: The final destination of all the Camino de Santiago routes offers much more than just the famous cathedral with its shrine to St. James. Explore the squares and narrow streets of Santiago’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful urban areas.

Sarria: Discover the medieval atmosphere in the attractive old quarter of this ancient town of Celtic origins or take a short taxi ride to visit the nearby, famous 6th century monastery of Samos. Sarria has been one of the major stops on the Camino de Santiago since the middle ages and is an important starting point for pilgrims at a distance of just over 100km from Santiago.

Melide: This charming little market town lies about halfway between Sarria and Santiago de Compostela. In the medieval town centre with its narrow, winding streets you will find shops, bars and restaurants where you can try the local speciality of ‘pulpo’ (octopus) in one of the traditional ‘pulperias’.

Accommodation

Staying at the very best accommodation available on the Camino Frances can transform a “good” Camino hiking tour into a “great” Camino hiking tour.

That’s why, at Hillwalk Tours, we take the quality of our accommodation partners seriously. So much so that you will find we strive to only work with high-quality and well-reviewed accommodation. Additionally, most of our accommodation partners have been personally checked by a member of the Hillwalk Tours team to ensure your comfort. You will experience a mix of small family-owned hotels, boutique pensiones (guesthouses), casas rurales (country cottages) and traditional pazos (manor houses).

As keen hikers ourselves we know you’ll want somewhere relaxing to put your feet up in the evening. A place where a warm smile from your hosts makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. While staying in the villages or towns, you can soak up the atmosphere of the Camino. Rural locations will offer the chance to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings with a glass of local wine!

Comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms (where available), tasty breakfast menus, and a friendly & cosy atmosphere – these are all the things that we like so you can rest assured that we’ll do our best to find them for you as well.

To find out more about the types of accommodation you can expect to find on a Hillwalk Tours walking holiday, read here: Accommodation on your Walking Tour

If you’d like to stay an extra night at any location during your hiking tour, just let us know.

Room Upgrade?: Maybe you would like to treat yourself to a spot of luxury at the end of your Camino? If so, then we recommend that you upgrade your overnight accommodation at the end of your tour in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela.

The extra cost of an upgrade is usually from approximately €75 per person sharing and €100 for single room bookings but we will advise you of the total cost before we confirm your booking. Please just mention your request for an Upgrade on your Booking Form.

Please Note:

Due to limited accommodation options in some locations on your tour, we may need to book you into accommodation which will require transfers to/from your hike start/end point or where you will have private bathroom facilities instead of an ensuite. We may also need to book you into the same accommodation for more than one night to cover multiple locations. The cost of this is covered in your basic tour price and will not affect your tour itinerary.

In general, we try to book accommodation which is as close to the local amenities as possible. If you are staying in a remote location (where access to local pubs/restaurants is not feasible), the hosts of the accommodation that you are staying at will ensure that you are well fed.
